The Broward/Palm Beach Office of the VITAS CPE Program is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Broward Program has an average daily census above 1,400 patients with Palm Beach more than 400. Clinical settings include private homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and inpatient units within local hospitals. Broward County is religiously and culturally diverse. This includes European Americans, Latin Americans, African Americans and Caribbean Americans. Although a large portion of patients and families are Protestant or Roman Catholic, approximately 33% are Jewish. Patients also include Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and Native Americans. This community is rich with art and cultural activities.
The Rev. Misti M. Johnson-Arce is certified by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Inc. as a CPE Supervisor. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology prior to receiving a Master’s of Divinity degree at Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, PA. She is ordained as a United Church of Christ pastor who specialized in chaplaincy. Misti joined VITAS Healthcare Corporation with experience in a vast number of clinical settings including hospice, trauma medicine, pediatric medicine, psychiatry and Veterans’ health care and even prison ministry.
Peer group sessions are currently shared between Broward and Palm Beach. We try to place students in clinical assignments closest to the areas in which they live. This component site currently offers Extended part-time and Summer intensive internships. The Extended part-time program is more conducive to clergy and community persons who have full-time schedules. It requires a commitment of approximately 17 hours per week including classroom and clinical hours. Clinical hours can be tailored to each person’s individual needs after orientation has been fully completed. The Summer Intensive program runs for 11 weeks, 40 hours per week with a Monday through Friday schedule 8:30-5:00pm. Upon completion of either program, participants earn 1 unit of ACPE accredited training, which is equivalent to 400 hours.
